Music snobs are THE WORST. These are the type of people who have to constantly remind you what “real hip hop” is or say things like “I like all music but country” or “Lady Gaga dresses so WEIRD”. As soon as people say shit like this, I label them and put them in a box in my head entitled “garbage” and keep them at a distance because I seriously cannot even deal.
Here are a few things I’d love to say to all the music snobs in my life:
- The world is a gigantic dumpster fire. If people listening to Lil Uzi Vert or Cardi B or Nicki Minaj makes them happy and less likely to kill themselves by overdosing on tide pods, then fine. There is no “real hip hop” genre that musicians have to live up to. Fuck you. You aren’t more “woke” because you only listen to Kendrick Lamar and talk about “revolution”. You’re asshole and probably aren’t fun at parties.
- You’re no fashion expert. Look down at what you’re wearing right now. Can you really judge other people’s clothes? You probably wear jeans and t-shirts and shop at Target like the rest of us. The way someone dresses doesn’t determine what type of musician they are or how much talent they have. (Lady Gaga is actually a classically trained pianist, was nominated for an Oscar and has an amazing voice). Let people express themselves through their clothing the way they want to. Not everything is going to be your style and that’s ok.
- Country music is awesome. If you’ve never heard it or have only heard 3 songs in your entire life, you have some nerve judging an entire genre of music. If you still don’t like it after listening to it, fine, but don’t shit on stuff you’ve never actually listened to. Punk rock, heavy metal, Taylor Swift… all also awesome.
For the rest of 2018, I challenge you to expand your musical horizons. Listen to new music. Discover new genres. Take a dance class. Go to more concerts. If you don’t know what to listen to, go on pandora or spotify or soundcloud and just listen to random shit or ask your friends to make you a playlist of their favorite songs. And don’t just stick to music from your home country either; find out what people in Spain or the UK or Australia and Brazil listen to as well. There is an entire world of music out there waiting for you. Why waste your time talking shit about Nicki Minaj on facebook? She isn’t thinking about you.
